How many participants will be selected?

The YSEALI MAP aims to bring together 75 participants. This is subject to change based on guidelines on mass gatherings.
Participants will be selected based on the initiative they submit. If one initiative has three core members indicated in the application form, then all three will be part of YSEALI MAP.

What if I'm 17 (under the age limit) or 36 (over the age limit)?
You must be 18 by January 31, 2021, or 35 until June 10, 2021.

I'm a citizen of one of the countries listed, but I'm currently based outside the region. Can I still apply?
No. You can only apply if you are a resident of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam).

Does my initiative have to be legally registered?
No, it does not have to be legally registered.

My initiative is only a few months old. Is it eligible?
We're looking for initiatives that are at least six months old by January 31, 2021.

Can I submit an existing research project?
Yes, but the research must demonstrate application and real-world impact.

What language will be used during the YSEALI MAP?
English will be the main medium of instruction. The program and its content are interactive and international in nature, so we expect that applicants are fluent and conversational in English. There will be no formal English proficiency requirement, such as TOEFL or IELTS exam results.

The country I live in is different from the country I was born in, but both are in Southeast Asia. Is that okay?
Yes, you just need to show proof that you live, study, or work in any of the 11 Southeast Asian countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam) and that you are a citizen of any of the 11.

I don't have a passport yet, but it's really easy to get a passport in my country. Can I submit a citizen ID instead for application purposes?
Yes, you can. But if you get selected, we cannot book your flights unless you have a passport, and we give participants only one week to confirm their slot. Participants will get notified about the status of their application by mid-March 2021.

How do I submit my application form?
Please apply using the official online application form here. You can download the editable Pages / MS Word file from here to help you think through your answers. Please note that the files are set to "View Only," which means you cannot edit them directly and will need to download them.

If I get accepted, do I need to pay for anything?
All expenses are covered, including costs for airfare and local transportation, lodging and meals, and health and accident insurance. However, all participants must arrive at the main international airports in their respective regions.

What if I'm accepted but I can't attend the activities?
We ask that you do not apply to this program unless you are certain you are able to attend. We understand that these are uncertain times and that situations change quickly, so in case there are factors out of our control, we can discuss this privately. In the case of an emergency or unforeseeable circumstances that preclude your participation, please notify staff as soon as possible.
